Remind me again why I haven’t moved to Spain? Sardines and beaches sounds so nice!

Many ask themselves that same question. It’s not always as easy as it seems or so I have heard. I have been here too long to remember the transition.

True, I know it would be a difficult transition. But thoughts of a beach view, some bread and sardines and a chilled glass of white make it very tempting.

I’m dual US/Italian so the bureaucracy is a lot less difficult for me. Of course Italy would be even easier. I did live in the Netherlands for three years, which is an incredibly well organized country, but even that was difficult. But the bureaucracy was easy. And everyone speaks English. Still, you’re always one of them, not one of us. Never entirely in the loop.

And I know all the expats and tourists are making it more difficult for locals. I would hate to be part of that. Definitely would choose someplace that’s off the typical rotation.

Italy is pretty darn good! Yes, they are making it difficult in many places. Tourism is necessary but the cost of housing is ridiculous due to people who can afford much more than most locals. I came here so young and never left so I have felt more here than there for a long time. That was a mouthful.

I needed this deep dive into sardines. I have dreamed of eating them just like that. It hasn’t happened yet but I’ll make it happen before long. Divine!!!

They are so delicious.

Ooooh yeah. My best sardine experience was also on the beach - in Galicia for the Carmen festivals. There's something about the sea air that makes grilled sardines so much better. 😍

As soon as the month of June arrives, or late May, my appetite for fresh sardines kicks in. We had some great ones yesterday on the coast here. Portugal really does them right. And, Galicia! I have only been in Galicia once for the Carmen festivals. I need to make it up there more in the summer. But, we do some pretty ones down here on the coast as well!

Do you eat the heads and tails? Bones? I'm not a regular eater of sardines. Sorry if this question is very basic. Good story, by the way!

Normal question! When they are fresh and grilled we just pull the meat off the bones as the bones are too hard to swallow. Best done with the fingers or the mouth unless one is too dainty, then a fork and knife can be used. For canned sardines, the bones get softer and can be consumed. They are a great source of calcium.

I absolutely love grilled sardines! As long as they are fresh. However, when I tried to touch some in our local fishshop, to check the freshness, I I was scolded and almost thrown out of the shop. It might have been an insult.

haha!! Do not touch the goods! Yes, only fresh sardines and in season!
